Why One Girl?

mass + muster is proud to support One Girl, a not-for-profit organisation that harnesses the power of education to drive change for girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda. Every year, we will donate 5% of our profits to One Girl because we believe that education among women will help to eliminate gender inequality, reduce poverty and to reverse the current state of crises our planet is in. Not only that, but it will also provide the freedom and knowledge for girls to become whoever they want to be.

At this moment, 130 million girls around the world aren’t at school, for a number of reasons but mostly because of the simple fact they were born a girl. One Girl are working to change that, because EVERY girl deserves the fundamental right to an education no matter where she is born, how much her parents earn, what her cultural norms are, and what her religion adheres to. Every girl deserves the right to grow, learn and make choices about her future. It’s sad to report that a girl in Sierra Leone is more likely to be married before the age of 18 than she is to finish high school.

One Girl help girls to overcome all of the barriers to education including:

  • Providing access to quality education both in and outside the classroom
  • Supporting and inspiring future female role models — because if you can see it, you can BE it!
  • Promoting health and menstrual hygiene while tackling period taboos.
  • Advocating for sexual rights, safe relationships and respect for girls Promoting gender equality by elevating the role and status of women and girls everywhere.

With all of the above priorities in place, One Girl is on a mission to make sure  that girls have a better future because their health, status, income and knowledge all change for the better. And the ripple effects are endless.

“We are so privileged in a country like Australia, and often it is easy to forget about the women and girls who don’t have their basic needs met. One Girl was the obvious choice as the charity we wanted to get behind for mass + muster. We are all about empowering women, have an all women team who are highly educated and specialise in specific areas and we love to support small and local women-led businesses. It was a no brainer that One Girl was the charity we wanted to support. We believe that if you educate a girl you can change the world” Said Simone, Co-Founder of mass + muster.

Education for one single girl means that for every year she stays in school, her income will increase by 10-25%, she’ll get married when she chooses to, have control over her own income and break the cycle of poverty — something that every girl deserves the right to.

You may think that other basic needs should be supported first like clean drinking water and shelter, but the power of education is paramount and will in turn help to eradicate other societal issues. Now that’s something we are proud to support. It tugs on my heartstrings because if my little girl didn’t have access to schooling, I don’t know how her life would turn out, so if we can change just one girl’s life for the better by donating 5% of our profits, then that makes it worthwhile,” said Bec, Co-Founder of mass + muster.
