How to feel good in 2020

January is always a bit of a write off, lots of ambitious New Year’s resolutions set, and yet you still find yourself floundering through the days, juggling all the social gatherings, still plenty of beverages on the beach, getting back into the work routine and all in all, enjoying the long Summer days. We know life is busy, and you know what you need to do to feel good, yet with this in mind, we have come up with a list of other things you can easily implement to help you feel good this year, whether you are ticking off those pesky resolutions or not. Let’s get into it! 2020 here we come.

Less social media, more books.

We love social media, it connects us in a way that we never have before but there can always be too much of a good thing. Notice yourself scrolling whenever your hands aren’t busy, forgetting to look up and take in your surroundings on a walk. Sound familiar? Maybe it’s time to use ‘Screen Time’ on your phone to curb your instant Instagram addiction. This app lets you set your screen time spent on specific apps to say 30 mins a day so you know you aren’t wasting precious hours being unproductive. We plan to read more books this year, especially before bed. Some favourites you can add to your book bucket list are:

Less plastic and more sustainability

Now this is something we are so very passionate about, it is the very ethos of our brand. Not only are most of our gift boxes sustainable, eco-friendly and natural, we also offer a completely zero single use plastic gift box – a perfect place to start to put this point in place. Us at mass + muster are more committed this year to making an effort to fight the worlds war on waste. Think about this “It’s just one straw, said 7 billion people.” That’s why every little change you make, truly makes a difference. Less supermarkets and more farmers markets

Farmers markets are a perfect way to fill up your fridge and a lot more fun to browse than your standard supermarket. There are so many benefits to grabbing your goods at your local market including the fact you are buying straight from the source, there is no middleman so you can literally talk to the real life farmer about their products and how they are made. This in turn ensures the money ends up in the farmers pocket and not the mass commercial supermarkets. This way you can shop produce that’s in season (enabling you to eat a variety of foods), you are supporting local and you can even incorporate a social catch up with friends and meet there for breakfast.

 

Less chores, more play

Has Monday ever rolled around and you thought to yourself that all you did was admin and housework over the weekend, with little to no time to actually LIVE, laugh and enjoy yourself? Yeah us too. We don’t lose the need for novelty and pleasure as we grow older and often the notion is that once we reach adulthood, that we have to be serious. Play brings joy and it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships. It can be simple things, like talking to your pets, playing with little ones, reading aloud to your partner, playing an actual board game or fun game on the beach. If you don’t know how to incorporate more of this into your life, think about what excited you as a child and don’t hold back. Chores can wait, life is far too short.

Less car trips, more bike rides and skate dates

Before you jump in the car to go 500m down the road to the shops, stop and think – should I bike? Because yes you should! Even to work if it’s not too far for you. Not only are there incredible health benefits to cycling, there are also environment benefits too. Bike riding uses minimal fossil fuels and is a pollution-free transportation method. Did you know just cycling 10km to and from work each day would save 1500kg of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Oh and did we mention it’s free?! Of course we all have busy lives and need our cars, but if you can turn a few trips into bike rides, you will be doing a heck of a lot for your health, our planet and your pocket.

Less gym, more nature

It is believed that connecting to Earth’s natural energy can diminish chronic pain, fatigue, ease stress and help alleviate many ailments that plague us today. This can be done simply by walking barefoot on grass, sand, dirt or rock, which allows the Earth’s electrons to be taken up into the body. Next time you can’t be bothered sweating it indoors at the gym, take your shoes off and go for a walk instead. Not only will it clear your head, give your body some Vitamin D, it will also provide nature’s biggest antioxidant straight through the souls of your feet. Also, make it a goal to get in the ocean for a surf or swim every weekend as salt water has numerous healing properties also. Exercise in nature’s playground this year and you’re bound to feel great in 2020.

Less text messages, more catch ups

It’s so easy to be stuck behind a screen and think you are being a good friend or don’t need a friend simply because you have them at your fingertips. Even though it feels like we are more connected than ever, Australia as a nation is becoming more disconnected. The phrase ‘let’s catch up’ is thrown around regularly but never acted upon. Physical connections, friendships and relationships are so important for our mental health, something you should be prioritising in your life. Make a plan to catch up with a different friend every weekend, it only has to be a coffee, a walk on the beach or even strolling the markets together. And stick to it, you’ll be less lonely and a whole lot happier when you do.

 

Less food waste, more compost

Did you know one third of all food produced is wasted, costing the global economy more than $940 billion each year? (Oz Harvest, 2020). Also 8% of greenhouse gases heating up our planet are caused by food waste. If you do ONE thing for the planet this year, invest in a compost. Live in an apartment? Get the body corporate to organise a joint one. You can compost anything that was once living, including all food scraps, grass clippings, old flowers etc – as well as materials like paper, straw, cardboard, dry leaves, crushed egg shells, tea and coffee grounds. Less plane rides, more local stay-cations

Take one round trip from Perth to Sydney and you have generated about 20% of the greenhouse gases that your car emits over an entire year. So, when long weekends come around, pack up the car and head off on a roadtrip. There are so many places to explore only an hour or so down the road no matter where you live in Australia. Better yet, why don’t you pack your empty esky and head to one of the towns devastated by the recent bushfires and either volunteer your time or fill up your esky with local produce to inject money back into the communities that have lost everything. Less meat, more greens

Meat-free Monday has been around for 10 years now, and abstaining from eating animals just one day a week can make a huge difference. This was a campaign designed to raise awareness around the detrimental environmental impact of animal agriculture and industrial fishing. This is one of the easiest things you can do to help make a positive change to slow climate change, preserve precious natural resources and improve your health. Now make it your mission to have two meat-free days a week! Plant-based diets are a huge trend and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, so add some more greens to your plate to help you feel great!

We just want to share that we certainly aren’t perfect here at mass + muster but we are all starting somewhere and it’s about progress, not perfection.
